Collective and Community Practices
5 Jun
With Carlos Trancoso and Ivan Da Silva
Type: Workshop & Creative Engagement
Collective and Community Practices draws on the artistic experience developed in four villages in the Serra do Açor to explore the paths of multidisciplinary articulation between art, culture and community. Between local voices and perspectives coming from outside, a collective process is revealed in which artists and territory meet, listen to one another and transform each other. Through this sharing, a space of common creation takes shape, where artistic practice becomes rooted in the landscape, in the people and in the stories that inhabit these villages.
Carlos Trancoso is a visual artist and founding member of Coletivo BARDA, where he takes on the roles of producer and artistic director in projects such as Porvir and Imagens Verdes. Trained in Architecture (FAUP, 2012) and holding a Master’s degree in Artistic Photography (IPCI, 2019), he develops collaborative visual research, exploring photography, installation, programming and video. He has taken part in national and international exhibitions, including Backlight Finland, Bienal de Fotografia do Porto, Bienal da Maia, f/est Amarante, Photo Open Up and Athens Digital Arts Festival, and collaborates regularly with Ivan da Silva on projects such as Junta Seca and Vieses. In 2025, he published his first photobook, How to Build a Telescope, published by XYZ Books.
Ivan Da Silva studied optometry, a path that led him to visual anthropology and photographic chemistry. He completed the professional photography course at IPF and the Master's in Image Design at FBAUP. His research focuses on the role of images, adopts an iconoclastic posture, and explores different creation methods, with particular interest in vernacular techniques and experimental processes. His exhibition history features the #nextluk project, with presentations at the Museu da Vila Velha in Vila Real (2018) and the Circulation(s) festival (2019). His experimentation took shape in new exhibitions at Galeria Dentro and the Maia Biennial. The dialogue between practice and theory sparked his interest in pedagogy. He currently develops training sessions and educational projects. These initiatives combine knowledge about image creation with participatory artistic practices. The goal is to facilitate moments of socialization, communication, and joint creation, as well as to stimulate multidisciplinary and intercultural sensitivities. He is the founder of the Community Analog Photography Laboratory T(e)uLab, a founding member of the Barda Collective, an artist-in-residence at the self-managed art space Túnel, manager of Imagens Verdes (an initiative promoting participatory activities for seniors), and a collaborator at CAV.
