Thomas Demand
Thomas Demand (Munich, 1964) is a German artist known for his large-scale photographs based on images drawn from the mass media or his personal archive. Demand reconstructs these scenes at life size using paper and cardboard, and then photographs them, calling into question photography’s supposed objectivity while exploring the gap between reality and representation. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, and later at Goldsmiths’ College in London. Initially trained as a sculptor, he soon made photography the central medium of his practice. His work has been widely exhibited in major international museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Serpentine Gallery in London, Fondazione Prada in Venice, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. He has also participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and represented Germany at the São Paulo Biennial. He lives and works in Berlin and Los Angeles.
