Jonathasde Andrade
Jonathas de Andrade, born in Maceió and based in Recife, is a visual artist working across film, photography, and installation. His films are often developed through collaborations with communities, building performative narratives that move between fiction and documentary. His work explores the relationship between fiction and reality through allegories that probe questions of gender, class, and race rooted in Brazil’s sociocultural structure, as well as the contradictions of its colonial past. Recent projects include a retrospective at Jeu de Paume (2025), the solo exhibition Permanência Relâmpago at Galeria Nara Roesler (2025), and commissioned projects for the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Vatican, presented at Conciliazione 5 and MACRO, Museum of Contemporary Art of Rome (2025). He represented Brazil at the 59th Venice Biennale and has participated in major international exhibitions, including the Sharjah Biennial, the São Paulo Biennial, the Istanbul Biennial, and the New Museum Triennial. His work is held in collections including the Centre Pompidou, Museo Reina Sofía, MoMA, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, the Guggenheim Museum, and Tate Modern.
