José Maia has exhibited regularly since 1999. His work has been presented in various countries, including the United States, England, Germany, France, Belgium, Norway, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, and Macau. He was the artistic director of Espaço CAMPANHÃ (2008 to 2009) and is currently the artistic director of Espaço MIRA (since 2013). He was part of the Educational Service team at the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Serralves Foundation (2000 to 2020) and the Educational Service team at Culturgest Porto. He taught at the Escola Superior Artística do Porto (ESAP), Balleteatro, and the Instituto Português de Fotografia do Porto. As a curator, he has organized several solo and collective exhibitions in alternative and institutional spaces in Porto and Lisbon, as well as in Faro, Braga, Guarda, and Elvas. He is a professor at the Universidade Lusófona do Porto.
