The Paintings of Indigenous Artist Kent Monkman in the Teaching of Canadian History

29 May

16:30–17:30

With Andrea Roca

Type: Workshop & Creative Engagement

The Paintings of Indigenous Artist Kent Monkman in the Teaching of Canadian History proposes a reflection on Monkman’s paintings as gestures of sharing and return that move through colonial narratives, reopening Canadian history as a living territory, where memories breathe together. In an educational context, his work calls for reciprocity: to hold is to assume responsibility for the stories that constitute us, to give is to argue, and to receive is to welcome what has been concealed.

Andrea Roca is an anthropologist and holds a PhD. She is a member of the Laboratory for Research in Ethnicity, Culture and Development at the National Museum, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She teaches Spanish, Portuguese, Culture and Brazilian Literature at the University of British Columbia, and Cultural Anthropology and Indigenous History at Corpus Christi College, both institutions in Vancouver, Canada.
