Installed in the Sala da Cidade, formerly the refectory of the Monastery of Santa Cruz, once home to Hodart's life-size terracotta Last Supper (1530–1534), Nan Goldin's Stendhal Syndrome (2024), a 26-minute slideshow on video, unfolds as a contemporary counter-tableau. Alluding to the psychosomatic condition which causes dizziness and fainting at the sight of overwhelming beauty, Goldin intercuts photographs of Classical and Baroque masterpieces with intimate portraits of her friends, while her own voice reads passages from Ovid's Metamorphoses over a haunting soundtrack.
